The Norwegian side reached the league phase by beating NEC Nijmegen 3-0 at home after winning the away leg 3-1 — an emphatic qualifying performance that removed a Dutch club with more European pedigree. They arrived having earned it. Bayern beating them 5-0 is therefore a statement about Bayern rather than a reflection of weak opposition.
Why Manchester United Should Care
United marked their own return with a 4-0 win, an emphatic result against the weakest opponent on their schedule. Bayern's 5-0 came against a side that had just eliminated a Dutch club in qualifying. Both are wins over lesser opposition; the quality of the opposition differs, and the gap between those two results is the size of the task United face when the fixtures meet.

Bayern's +5 on Matchday 1 is not decoration. Elite clubs maximising margins against weaker opposition is a deliberate strategic behaviour under this format.

A 5-0 defeat is a heavy start, but qualifying clubs are used to being written off. The more practical damage is to goal difference — in a single-table format, a -5 in the opening round is difficult to recover across seven remaining fixtures for a club that will be underdogs in most of them.
